Our First House!

Several years ago Derek and I started vacationing on the beautiful Sunshine Coast and fell in love with Roberts Creek.
Last year in March we finally made the move and rented a cabin by the beach for a few months while we waited for the right home to come on the market.
We found our house in summer and moved in September 1st. The past few months have been non-stop renos, yard work and getting the workshop built but we’re finally settled!

Here are a few photos of our home:

The shop with CNC resurrected! We’re currently cutting the header boards for all the doors and windows. You can see one partially finished on the tablesaw (centre) The giant slab of oak on the right is part of a bowling alley floor which we are upcycling into a giant workbench from.

This year will be fun with the new workshop!
Stay tuned for lots of project progress reports coming soon!

2nd Clock project

Here’s a brand new clock we’re in the middle of making. The top shows the design, below that are a few snapshots of the first two layers cut. The base layer is a 2 inch thick slab of walnut, next is the maple, the top layer will be tigerwood. That’s the orange top part in the drawing. We will be cutting the tigerwood this afternoon. We’ll bring is along to Maker Faire in whatever stage of completion it happens to be. This one is much bigger than our first clock, Ā measuring about 2ft wide….working our way up to a grandfather clock.Image

Time for a beer!

Well the pub sign is finally done! We’ll be bringing it to Maker Faire this year but it’s final home will beĀ above our kegerator besideĀ theĀ bar.

We cut the sign on our big CNC from scraps of HDU (High Density Urethane) kindly given to us by Dan Sawatsky of Imagination Corporation. Dan is pretty much the world’s greatest sign maker and a huge inspiration.

Phew! I think it’s time for a beer.

Pub Sign

Spring is here, the sun is shining and I’m working in the shop! Life is good.
We’re starting to gear up for Vancouver Maker Faire 2012. First project to finish off – the Fox and Raven pub sign! This one has been sitting on my work bench for far too long.
I finally started the painting this week. Here’s the progress so far:

Fox and Raven sign progress

You may notice a sign making beginners mistake (I’ve made several) painting before gluing on the letters. I thought it would be easier to paint this way but now I’m wondering how the hell I’ll get the letters to stick.

Oleg

I’ve been hanging around in the Fur section of Dressew a lot lately. Dressew is the best fabric store in Vancouver. It’s huge! They also have the largest selection of fur fabric anywhere in the lower mainland, which attracts a certain…clientelle.
Before you ask, I wasn’t buying any to wear! I’ve started on a few new projects which require vast quanities. The first is Oleg the Yeti:

He’ll stand about 30″ tall.
I’m making a Sasquatch next!

We cut out the fox and raven parts of the pub sign today on the CNC, so I’ll be carving that soon hopefully.
Also, we’ve almost finished the clock – just need to cut out the 3 engraved brass circles and secure the clock part in place.
